During the Advent season, so many of us are looking at the lives of Elizabeth, Zechariah, and John.
In Luke 1:80, we find the description of the manner in which John grew as a child:
“And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit.” (NASB)
Reading those words the other morning, brought the reminder of the way another child also grew:
“The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom and the grace of our God was upon Him.” (Luke 2:40, NASB)
We need to be mindful of the way in which our children, and grandchildren, are growing.
- Are they growing strong in spirit?
- Are they growing in wisdom?
- Are they growing in the ways of God?
“It was there [in the wilderness] that this man, a Levite by birth, drew near to the Lord, so that he could prepare the way for the final atoning sacrifice – Jesus.”
(from Just as He Promised by the Daily Grace Co., page 88)
Another ‘so that’ statement.
The way John grew as a child was in preparation for his call in life and the purpose which God had ordained.
John was also prepared during the time he spent alone in the wilderness.
” … and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.“ (Luke 1:80b, NASB)
Those times spent in the trials of life, in the wilderness, serve purpose. They are not for naught. It is the mercy of God which is at work, intentionally preparing us for the future. He is teaching and growing us to equip us for the days ahead.
From a young age, God began to work in John so that he would grow in the Lord and fulfill the plans and purposes of God.
From a young age,
and through every season of hardship,
the Lord is at work in our lives.
There were many wonderful and thought provoking Christmas posts in last week’s linkup. It was most difficult to pick one to share. So may I suggest go back to the linkup and read one, or more if you like, and then leave a comment to encourage the writer. You will find the linkup HERE.
Come, sit a spell. Bring your coffee, your posts, and your thoughts. If you link up, kindly visit those who have drawn up a seat around you.
** Please note: I’ll be taking a break from the linkup the next two weeks to spend time with family and enjoy the days. We will gather back here on Wednesday, January 8th. May you all have a most blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!
It’s a good reminder that everything God allows into our children and grandchildren’s lives is for their good and growth in Him. May He give us much wisdom in our interactions and influence in the lives of young ones—young physically and spiritually.
I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful Christmas.
Joanne, have a blessed Christmas celebration with your family. Joy to the world, the Lord has come!
See you next year …
This is such a unique reflection for the Advent season. I’m fascinated by the life of John the Baptist, and always wonder about the time line, when his elderly parents passed away, and what Zechariah the priest would have thought about his off-beat lifestyle and diet!
Joanne, I hope you’re doing well and looking forward to a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s. I always enjoy your thoughtful devotions and this one was no different.
Joanne, so encouraging to remember that God wastes nothing of our experience. Whether designed by Him as in the case of John the Baptist, or other circumstances, He redeems everything for His glory and our good! Yes, let’s continue to grow! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
Joanne, I think it is important to trust God when He takes our children through the wilderness. It is an essential part of their faith journey. I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful Christmas time.
