Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Specific.

My Gram was a woman of prayer. Serious prayer.

One of my fondest memories of her is when she would babysit us at night so my parents could go to church. We were young. My brother was an infant and I was four, maybe five years old.

Before putting me to bed, she would wash me up, brush my teeth, put my pj’s on, and then we would go to my room. There we would kneel by my bed and she would pray.

She was Italian, hardly spoke English, and she prayed in Italian. With my head bowed and my eyes closed, I would anticipate who she would pray for next. She went down the line, from oldest to youngest, praying for our family members. It took a bit for her to get to my name.

They were not casual and quick prayers. Often we would be on our knees for twenty minutes or longer. Gram was in no hurry to stop bringing her needs to the Lord.

But over the last few days as I have prayed a few prayers of my own, the memories have come flooding back to mind. The memories also brought a few questions –

  • How many of her prayers were answered back then?
  • How many of her prayers were answered in the years following?
  • How many of her prayers are yet to be answered?

The more I have been pondering these questions, the more I am finding myself motivated to keep on praying.

“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.” (Ephesians 6:18, NASB)

Pray for specific people,
and specific situations,
because God moves when we pray.

** This is the song I heard for the first time recently and brought the memories to mind.
