It’s early Sunday morning as I sit watching the snow fall. Yes, it is snowing again and it is stunningly beautiful.
The morning is still a bit dark and gray, there is no wind, and the flakes are big. Like very big. They are falling softly, gently, straight down and probably will not result in much accumulation.
But in this moment, it speaks peace to my soul.
It is cloaking this day in its perfection and peace and beauty. All is well.
Oh sure, the weathermen can give us an explanation of the weather, but there is only One who can release it upon this earth. The snow is a beautiful reminder of God, who in this moment, is sharing the snow only He holds in His storehouse:
“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, Or have you seen the storehouses of the hail.” (Job 38:22, NASB)
The snow is falling gently, actually it is falling softly, quietly and not a sound can be heard. Maybe the softness, and the quiet, is the very sound of peace. His peace.
This world is currently hearing the rumbles of discontent and rumors of war. There are many disagreements needing to be resolved among countries, within countries, and amongst people.
But this gentle and soft snow continues to speak peace for only He can bring peace to this world and to our souls.
The words of the psalm, read earlier, are still open on my lap:
“Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.” (verse 1, NASB)Â
It’s good to praise God. It’s good for our souls and it’s becoming to our faces. Our resting faces become more pleasant, His joy will be displayed in our eyes and smiles.
“Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your sons within you. He makes peace in your borders.” (verses 12-14, NASB)
As we praise, He strengthens us, the very gates of our hearts and minds. He brings peace within the borders of our bodies and souls.
“He gives snow like wool.” (verse 16, NASB)
There is the connection to snow, to watching the snow yet falling outside my window.
- “He sends forth His command to the earth.” (verse 15)
- “He sends forth His word and melts them.” (verse 18)
His commands, His Word – He sends them forth. He sends them forth to do His will, to accomplish His purposes.
“So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11, NASB)
The snow –
a reminder this morning of the way His Word covers us,
enveloping our souls in His peace.

Today I am joining …
Just what I needed to read this morning! I love watching big snowflakes fall in the calm silence—I always feel wrapped in a blanket of God’s peace. Thank you for the word blanket this morning!
Anita, your post was the reminder I needed this morning! The tern chick post was beautiful in both word and photo!
I appreciate these thoughtful words, Joanne. And I do enjoy considering weather as something God sends to us, just as he makes the sunrise and ordains every blade of grass.
The weather often brings lessons at just the right time. God is in every detail, great and small, of our days.
I’m so glad God made snow. I wish we’d see it a little more often in Alabama because it is quite magical how it creates such a hush over the earth, a mystical beauty.
Lisa, it amazes me that no matter how many times I have seen snow fall, each time it still amazes and speaks of God’s peace and forgiveness.
I used to love those early mornings watching the sun begin to shine over the night and the falling snow. I must confess, I do not miss them in this season of life!
Amen. I love the early morning. We don’t get a lot of snow here in the Lowcountry. I was born and raised in Virginia. There was plenty of snow in the valley and the mountains. There is something so peaceful about the snow. God gives us wonderful blessings to enjoy. 🙂
Melissa, it is so true – God has given us blessings in His creation, in every season!
What a beautiful picture of letting God’s peace settle over all the affairs of our lives.
I don’t see snow very often living in the South, but I can still relate to the sense of peace I always feel when I see it. And wonder. Wow. Thanks so much for the feature this week, Joanne!
Joanne, such a lovely reflection on snowfall. We had snow this Sunday morning too, and it was so gorgeous! I love the peaceful nature of snow; isn’t it amazing how God chose for it to be just that peaceful?
Amen! I love how Abba gives us what we need. Have a great day ma’am. I can remember how peaceful it was to watch a quiet snowfall event. Very soothing indeed.
Thank you for the peaceful reminder, Joanne. I desperately needed to hear these words today, “The snow –a reminder this morning of the way His Word covers us, enveloping our souls in His peace.”
Oh, such a calming post with oh, so much beauty all wrapped together. I had to look closely at the photos of the white-topped plant to make sure it was snow or a flower. We were ‘supposed’ to have snow and then rain this morning and I am sorely disappointed as I would have been bathed in such as your world. But with that missing, I did indeed bath and cover myself in His Word.
I definitely felt a peace and contentment come over me while reading this post. Thank you.
Joanne, this is such a beautiful piece. I share this same thought > “ Maybe the softness, and the quiet, is the very sound of peace. His peaceâ€. Indeed. I love watching it show, especially those big fluffy flakes. It always brings me to reflect on his presence. Blessings.
Visiting today from #26
Amen! I so enjoyed this post Joanne as I live in an area that never has snow (by the sea) even in our coldest of Winters.
We have a sprinkling on the Mountains, called the Great Dividing Range, two hours drive away but only a sprinkling.
Our snowfeilds here in Australia are called the Snowy Mountains & that is a couple of days travel away.
Thank you for sharing 🤗
Blessings,
Jennifer
I’m a little tired of snow right now! haha! But, you write beautifully of peace that one feels when seeing snow falling, silent to our senses. Yet, our God is always there, even in the stillness, and may our praises be heard (and known) even in the loudness of conflict.
Joanne, i love those days when the comes down … and we get to stay inside all cozy. God’s handiwork speaks to somewhere deep, doesn’t it ….
I love the peace that comes with watching snow fall too, Joanne. And I also love the psalm that says “praise is becoming†… instant beauty results when we lift our faces in praise to Him! Such an encouraging thought!
