Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Still.
Life can be noisy. The sounds of life all around can fill a room and make my mind feel overwhelmed with the cacophony produced from the meeting of various sources.
It makes me long to be still, or have stillness, around me. Just to sink into the cushion on the couch, pull up my blanket and be still, at rest. To be free of noise and just take in the sound of stillness.
Stillness has a sound – it’s the sound of peace.
There is tremendous power in stillness, and we need to be still to experience it.
“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and He brought them out of their distresses.
He caused the storm to be still, so that the waves of the sea were hushed.
Then they were glad because they were quiet,
so he guided them to their haven.”
(Psalm 107:28-30, NASB)
When we cry out to Jesus, He causes the storm to be still, and a hush is heard. We experience gladness because there is a quietness around us. It is then, because we are still, He can guide us to the very place He has purposed for us.

Today I am joining …
I wish that stillness worked for me,
but I can’t use that blessing
that comes with so much dignity,
for I must be confessing
to a loud thrash metal life,
the one that keeps me moving,
and I hear tell now from my wife
that neighbours think of moving
when I play Drowning Pool to loud,
or let Def Leppard out for frolic.
It’s not that I am holding proud,
nor acting hyperbolic…
I just follow saints and sages
and listen to the rock of ages
May we always listen and follow the Rock of Ages!
Oh so much yes! I love psalm 107 and the reminder of the stillness offering peace. God is so faithful â¤
It truly is such a good chapter as it continually shows us all God has done, pointing us to worship Him as we’re still before Him.
This past summer was a lesson in being still.
Yes it was. It’s amazing how in those times of stillness, we come to learn anew just how close He is to us. xo
just seeing your title and snapshot at the top calmed me, Joanne. and this song playing now joins the chorus of peace.
As I sat thinking about the word, I remembered the song. Grateful it blessed you as well.
So true, Joanne, “Stillness has a sound – it’s the sound of peace.” I’m so thankful for His Peace that passes all understanding.
Amen.
I’m letting my mind go from the image you alluded to of a boat in the storm. Perhaps stillness is the equivalent of turning off our motor, even when it doesn’t make sense, so that God can move us more easily.

Amie, in reading your thoughts just now, it aligned beautifully with the devotional I read earlier from “Streams”. You are right, when we turn off our motor, God is able to move us with no resistance. And from the devotional comes these words, “Blessed are you if you trust when you cannot understand.” Blessings!
I agree there is power in the stillness! Love the song you shared.
I had not heard it in a very long time and it blessed me to hear it again yesterday.
Yes! In all the noise of life we need those moments of stillness. I love the song you shared.
It seemed to be enjoyed by several. I am so grateful it came back to me.
Joanne, I crave stillness in the Lord’s presence, it seems the only thing that truly revives, restores and lifts me up especially when times are challenging!
Stillness does so much for our souls and is truly needed each day. May you find a pocket of stillness this weekend!
it’s so hard though isn’t it? To remember that he brings the stillness and to wait for it patiently. FMF10
It is very hard, Annette. I think it may be why I so enjoy and look forward to the early mornings. There is a stillness and peace I find that so prepares me for the day.
This past summer sure was a lesson in being still for me. I got to practice my one word 2021 the 8 weeks I was casted and booted. Blessings.
