Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Savor.
It was my One Word 2020. Little did I know how the word was going to play out in my life over the past year.
We all had to stay home for much of the year, the pandemic saw to that.
Yet in the middle of less busyness, it slowed us down to do more – to see more – to savor the presence of God.
Savor has been defined as “the quality that affects the sense of taste or smell; to exhibit the peculiar characteristics; to give a taste or smell” (by dictionary.com).
God calls us to spend time with Him, to savor Him so that our lives are affected by His peculiar characteristics, absorbing His aroma. It is only as we do, we are able to live in such a way for others to see Christ in us.
The two Scriptures which became my focus over the year were:
“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?â€
(Matthew 5:13, NLT)
“Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.â€
(Ephesians 5:2, NLT)
The year taught me to savor His Word and the beauty He places around me. I learned to savor the good and fun things as well as the difficult and painful, for God is in it all.
Every day is a gift to enjoy.
May we savor the days and the ways God shows up in each one.
Today I am joining …
Yes Joanne these are wise words. The more time we spend with God, the more we absorb Him, His unique aroma then becomes part of us! Such truth!
My habit of sllw, repetitive reading of scripture is my effort at savoring it’s beauty!
So true, Joanne, “God calls us to spend time with Him, to savor Him so that our lives are affected by His peculiar characteristics, absorbing His aroma.” He changes us in His Presence.
This was my word for 2020, too. Felt so ironic! But there’s no better gift than his presence, as you point out. It was definitely a year to realize this. Thank you for sharing!
Pretty soon I’m gonna be
spending lots of time with God;
I guess that shouldn’t bother me,
but it’s feeling kind of odd
to walk the walks I will be leaving
long before I planned,
but I will go on out believing
that I am in His hand,
for I have seen the other side,
and the joy awaiting there,
so I will not try to hide,
but God had best beware
and lock up every vase and candle,
for I party like a Vandal.
Wise words. I’m still learning to savour God’s word and all its beauty and nuance.

Joanne, this is beautiful. I savor your encouraging words today. Blessings.
Joanne, interesting word for 2020. Your closing thoughts sum it up so beautifully:
“Every day is a gift to enjoy.
May we savor the days and the ways God shows up in each one.”
Amen!
