Each Friday my writing stems from a word prompt. Five minutes, one word prompt. The prompt this week is … Secret.
A secret is something hidden or unexplained. It is kept from being shared or explained to everyone. It’s a piece of information or knowledge shared with just a few.
Upon seeing the word prompt, one verse comes to mind as it has always amazed me:
“The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.” (Deuteronomy 29:29, NLT)
God has secrets, well kept at that.
Everything we need to know, He has revealed to us between the two covers of our Bible. The words we come to read and understand are ours to live by for all of our days. He has given us all we need to live this life.
“By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.” (2 Peter 1:3, NLT)
There are also many things in life we cannot, and may never, be able to understand and explain. But we hold onto the truths and promises He has given us and leave the unexplained in His hands, trusting Him with all things.
“Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!
For who can know the Lord’s thoughts?
Who knows enough to give him advice?
And who has given him so much
that he needs to pay it back?
For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.” (Romans 11: 33-36, NLT)
It’s quite simple really. The secret things belong to God. We are responsible to hold onto all we already know.
One day, the secrets will be revealed.
Until then, may we be faithful to the One who holds them all.

While it can be frustrating to us, in his wisdom God reveals to us only what and when we need to know. Age has helped me live, and even appreciate the mysteries of God. Beautiful reminder, Joanne.
Debby, I would so agree with you. Age definitely has helped me to be able to let go of the not knowing. God surely knows best what to reveal and what to withhold and it is always for our good. Blessings!
I was having a similar discussion with a friend the other day. I wouldn’t want a God I could completely comprehend. I want Him to be wiser and know more than I do. I need Him to. Thanks for sharing this truth! Blessings.
Liz, I agree with you. The only way we would ever completely trust Him is with knowing He is wiser than we could ever be. We need an almighty Savior.
Yes, faithfulness in holding revealed truths about God, and patience in the areas where He has chosen not to speak. This is wisdom!
He reveals to us what we need to know and are able to comprehend. He never rushes our growth and dependence on Him. Such an amazing God.
Amen, Joanne. Faithfulness is all that God requires of us. And even there, He is the faithful One.
Amen, Debbie.
That’s why are supposed to call on Him, Jeremiah 33:3, He will show us thing we don’t know. And I didn’t know a lot, even His name is secret and wonderful.
Rebecca, thank you for sharing Jeremiah 33:3 as that was the other verse coming to mind as I was writing but I could not think of where it was found.
This is a difficult concept for me to accept–I understand it, but I don’t always like it! I like to KNOW things ;).
Anita, praying we come to like it as it truly is for our best.
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great reminder Joanne but not always easy for this gal who likes to be in control! 😊 Pointing me back to the Bible to find all I need to know is what I need. Wise words! Cindy #fmf
Cindy, we may not like relinquishing control or knowing, but it is for our best.
One sweet day – it will all be revealed.
Amen!
It can be hard to accept this at times when we want to know it all, but it is important to remember that God is God and we can’t fully understand. I love 1 Corinthians 13:12 and the reminder that now we only see in part but one day we will see the full picture.
So very true, Lesley. Thank you for sharing 1 Corinthians 13:12!
Love this verse from Deuteronomy 29. God never burdens us with a load too heavy to bear. I don’t wan’t to know His secrets, I just want to be faithful to the truth that has been revealed. Great post!

God bless!
“I just want to be faithful to the truth that has been revealed.” Yes and me too!
I often think that as much as I am the type of person who wants to “know things,” I am thankful to not have the responsibility of what concerns God and God alone.
