“Then Mary took a twelve ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.” (John 12:3, NLT)
“By the breaking of that flask for the Lord’s sake, the home in Bethany was pervaded with the sweetest fragrance. Something was set free for all to appreciate, and none could be aware of it.”
(from Tables in the Wilderness by Watchman Nee, 3/27)
It is when something is broken and poured out that the aroma is dispersed throughout an entire room. Then you become aware, your sense of smell is heightened, detecting something it had not known previously.
There is a precious sweetness in people who have struggled through painful situations, enduring and persevering with a deep dependence on God. The brokenness in their life released something within them. They have become awakened to the treasures others often overlook:
“And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness–secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.“
(Isaiah 45:3, NLT)
A life that has experienced brokenness releases something undeniable and uncommon. One can recognize that something is not of this human world but from the very heart of God and by His Spirit.
“Yes, the odour that filled the house that day in Bethany still fills the Church today.”
(Watchman Nee)
We are the Church today. We are the ones God has chosen to fill this earth with the fragrance, His fragrance, to make Him known to those around us.
“For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” (2 Corinthians 2:15, NKJV)
Broken and poured out.
Fill the earth with His aroma.
Today I am joining … Porch Stories and Tell His Story and Coffee For Your Heart and Woman to Woman .
I always want to be used by God, but I never want the broken part. You are right, there is something sweeter when people can see and learn from those hard situations in my life.
Sarah, I so agree with you – we try to avoid and hide the broken parts. And yet, it is as we leave them uncovered but covered by His grace, we become more real, more authentic. Your comment has brought to mind, The Velveteen Rabbit 🙂 Blessings!
Broken and poured out. O Lord.
