It’s Friday!!! I’m joining Kate Motaung for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt. Five minutes. No editing. Many of us writing on that same word.
Today’s prompt is … Grow.
I read the word prompt in my Twitter feed this morning and conversations with three-year-old Jocelyn flood back to mind. I pick her up twice a week from pre-school and the car ride home is always interesting.
For the last two weeks, the conversation has pretty much been on repeat, “Mimi, look at this. Everything is growing.”
“Yes, Jocelyn, isn’t it beautiful?”
“No, it not beautiful. Everything is green. I don’t like green.”
I try for a few minutes to convince her of the beauty of “green” but she usually decides to look up through the sunroof and states, “I look at the sky. Blue is my favorite color!”
She’s a stubborn little one and my heart loves her fiercely.
Yesterday, however, was slightly different.
“Mimi, look, everything is growing!”
“Yes, Jocelyn, isn’t it beautiful?”
Her response this time was slightly different as she asked, “Why it growing? Why it green everywhere? The grass is green, the leaves are green, the bush “over dere” is green. Green all over.”
This time her little voice did not sound like she was going to take the conversation to the same dead end. There was the sound of a heart open and so I entered …
“Yes, it is green all over. This is because God is making everything grow beautiful.”
Silence in the back seat. And she is not looking up out of the sunroof but out and about her window. So I continued,
“And God is making you grow bigger too. Look how you are learning so many new things!”
This time she responded by letting me know all about her super hero legs which run fast, how she was taller now. She let me know she was no longer “small” but a big girl who goes to school.
The beauty of spring is no matter how many times we experience springtime, it brings the wonderful reminder:
“God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and to tell it in love – like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. He keeps us in step with each other. His very breath and blood flow through us, nourishing us so that we will grow up healthy in God, robust in love.” (Ephesians 4:15-16, The Message)
It was quiet in the back seat for but a few minutes, until Jocelyn said …
“I think green is God’s favorite color.
He grows a lot of green.”
Yes, Jocelyn, He does. And I am grateful He causes each of us to grow as well!
Today I am joining … Five Minute Friday and Faith Filled Friday and Grace & Truth .
So sweet! She is precious! Thanks for sharing!
II Peter 3:18 always comes to mind with talk of growth. (All those years teaching the wordless book to kids, likely): But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
That’s the kind of growth you’re encouraging in those blessed grandbabies of yours!
Thank you, Michele, I sure hope so!
What a sweet post, Joanne. Those little ones are faithful to bring lots of good God-moments to us, aren’t they? They see the world so freshly, and open our eyes to that wonder as well. Beautiful, thank you for sharing. ((grace upon grace))
It is amazing when we see our world through their eyes. They remind us of the beauty of purity and innocence.
Love her sweet heart! God must love the color green for sure!
Blessings!

Green is my absolute fave color and I love the idea of it being Gods fave color too. Out of the mouths of babes! Your granddaughters heart is so sweet. Visiting from FMF where I’m in the #4 spot.
Going to stop by now 🙂 Glad you visited!
I too have a little super hero who is growing up and waking up to the world around her! I love Jocelyn’s insistence on not liking green. So precious. Glad to be your neighbor at FMF.
My favorite part of the week is the two days I pick her up from school. Conversation in the car is just such fun. Enjoy your little one. Be sure to journal special moments with her! Blessings!
O! Such precious times…Savor them.
Believe me, I do, Susan! Probably why I write about them so often 🙂
What a tender conversation you shared with a sweet little one! May we, God’s children, be lush and green, always growing as we abide in Him. Thank you for sharing with us at Grace & Truth!
She is a cutie for sure and often makes me think!
Joanne, this is precious! And even more that you are speaking life into her heart. I happen to think God’s favorite color is also green:) I would love for you to share your message today at #FreshMarketFriday! It’s all about telling our passionate stories and intentional pouring into others lives….and it’s green:) Visiting from Grace & Truth and glad I did! Crystal~
Thank you for the invitation, Crystal, as I did stop by and link up 🙂 More so, thank you for sharing and encouraging me. Have a wonderful weekend!
