I picked up the book without ever having heard of the author. I loved the book cover. It’s strange to want to read a book solely based on the book cover and yet, it was a cover which invited me in. It bid me welcome.
Roots and Sky: A Journey Home in Four Seasonsby Christie Purifoy is the story through the first year of moving to a new home. The book weaves through each of the four seasons, bringing the lessons learned in each one.
The book so deeply spoke to my own heart, resonating with my own emotions which I had never expressed. There are deep lessons, hard ones,ĆĀ to be learned in every season of our life.
This is truly a book to be read slowly, savoring each chapter and the truth it brings.
We often feel our days are nothing but ordinary and go through the motions, passing time and seasons away. But Christie helps us to realize there is nothing ordinary about a single day lived.
Ordinary days don’t matter all that much, but they are given to us …..
I cannot tell whether or not these ordinary days are significant in the story of myself, in the story of my daughter, in the story of Maplehurst. Perhaps they are not. But can it be this lack of significance that makes them such a gift? They are gloriously excessive. Like a whole bowl of mismatched beads just asking me to thrust in my hand and wave my fingers.
(page 43)
Every day of our lives, ordinary yet perfectly fashioned for us. We can miss the sacred in the midst of the ordinary if we are not paying close attention. Every day connects to the next, much like the strand of mismatched beads. It is only when they are fully strung that we are able to see their purpose and their beauty.
Ordinary days… They bind all that is special and all that is not.

This book truly is a gift which helps us to savor the moments of our lives. It is a must read and one that should be read slowly, pencil in hand, ready to underline and jot thoughts in the margins. It is beautifully written with quotes and Scriptures which will touch your heart. You will come to embrace this truth ever more tightly:
“You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (Psalm 139:16, NLT)
As Christie takes us through each season, we come to recognize …
God is in each season of our lives,
and He makes His home with us.

Sounds like “my kind of book.” Thanks for the great review. It is parallel with Kristin’s “middle” exercise – kind of! š
Susan, it truly is a book for everyone as we all go through seasons. And yes, it did fit in with Kristin’s exercise. I hesitated to link up as I wasn’t sure but then decided to go ahead š
I’ve read another blogger’s review of this book and she felt the same way you did, Joanne. It must be a great and moving book to read and experience. Thanks for sharing your and the author’s inspiring thoughts with us, my friend!
Beth, it truly was a book which covered every season of life with such a poignancy it is sure to resonated with everyone. I was blessed to have read it. A keeper for sure!
I’ve put this on my reading list. I enjoyed the quotes about ordinary days that you included in your review. Thanks for introducing me to another gifted writer.
Thank you so much for your comment, Ginger. Christie was a new to me author as well. And I am so glad to have found her š May you be blessed when you read the book!
This caught me: “Every day of our lives, ordinary yet perfectly fashioned for us” – as I move into a new season, I find myself wanting to learn more about this! Lovely review – it did it’s job well!
I loved that quote too š I tend to think as only the exciting days as being fashioned for me. But to think of the ordinary ones – the laundry days, the frustrating potty training days, the days when sickness hits – those have been fashioned as well. I want eyes to see His hand in every moment. Thank you for stopping to share with me!
I’ve heard so much about this book. Thanks for the great insights into the author as well as the book — and I agree with you about the cover! Very inviting!
It truly is a book with a wonderful message. Glad you enjoyed the review.
So many of my blogging friends have mentioned this book lately. Clearly I need to add it to my list! š Thanks for sharing and linking up at #ThreeWordWednesday.
This book is still on my desk as I keep opening it here and there to read my notations. It is just a rich book.
Joanne,
This book sounds delicious and one that I would thoroughly enjoy. I sometimes find fiction to be a fast read that is fun, but not fully satisfying. This book sounds like it is very much not like that. One more book to add to my lengthening list!
Blessings,
Pam
Pam, this book is a very rich read. It is still sitting on my desk as I open it to read my notations. You will be satisfied when you read it as she provokes much thought.
Joanne, I haven’t read the book yet but it’s on my list. I’ve got so many right now that I’ve started and need to finish! š Your review makes me want to read it more. I’m visiting from #LiteracyMusingMondays!
Gayl, your comment brought a smile. I do the same thing. One year, I even made a new year’s resolution to only read one book at a time. I think I made it to February š Now I do not permit myself to start more than two at a time. So … somewhat better. This one is a must read. Thank you for stopping by!
Celebrating the seasons of life is so important! So is living in the moment. Thanks for sharing at the #LMMLinkup.
You are right, Leslie. Both are so important as it is the moments which make up the season.
I’ve never heard of this book, but it sounds fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com!
Tina
