There is much involving Christ’s birth which amazes us. The events surrounding Mary, each one, a miracle.
Joseph has astounding visits from an angel himself. First the angel comes to announce to him of Mary’s pregnancy. Joseph’s response?
“When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.” (Matthew 1:24, NLT)
He did not question. He did not take his time to think it over. He wasn’t able to google the odds of it all happening or how it occurred.
Plain and simple. Joseph just did it.
Jesus is born. Joseph, Mary, and their baby, Jesus, have all sorts of unexplained visitors from shepherds to wise men bearing gifts. It is then the angel comes to Joseph, a second time, to warn him of imminent danger. King Herod is searching for their baby and when he finds him, he intends to kill him.
And again, no, questions. No taking the time to think it over. No mapquest to find the best and quickest route.
“That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, and they stayed there until Herod’s death.” (Matthew 2:14, NLT)
Immediate obedience.
I think I may have overlooked Joseph for years. Perhaps the very reason God chose Joseph to be Mary’s husband was for this very quality … God knew Joseph would do as he was asked. God knew that His Son would be in good human hands. Mary, His mother, loved Him. Joseph protected them both.
Joseph gets a second visit from the angel. The angel comes again. Don’t miss that. The angel came a second time because heaven knew Joseph would listen. He would follow through on the instructions given him.
Serious and immediate obedience.
Moses, in giving instruction to the Israelites, explained that the people had a choice to make. The choice would result between life and death, blessings and curses. Moses implored the people to choose life, calling on heaven and earth to witness the choice they would make ….
“You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. The is the key to your life.”
(Deuteronomy 30:20, NLT)
There we have it – the key to our lives.
Serious and immediate obedience.

A great reminder 🙂 I need to wake up and do as God commanded – thank you for this word straight to my heart
Grateful that it spoke to you. We often wonder why God is not moving in a particular situation & it may very well be that we have yet to obey what we’ve already been told to do. It was good to see Joseph in this way today. Have a joyous Christmas!
Joseph is sadly not mentioned often in the Bible. A great example of obedience and trust in the Lord.
God bless.
I am glad you thought so as well. Amazing to glean so much from so little mention of him 🙂 May you & yours have a blessed Christmas.
