When my children were younger, they each seemed to come to a point that all they did was point and ask, “What’s that?” The questions were endless and for a while, this stage of growth seemed like it would never end. Yet isn’t the point of asking questions to bring growth?

We have been encouraged to ask questions from very young. Here are just a few quotes on questions:

  • “Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” (Voltaire)
  • “Learn from yesterday; live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” (Albert Einstein)
  • “Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.” (Anthony Robbins)
  • “Take the attitude of a student, never be too big to ask questions, never know too much to learn something new.” (Og Mandino)
  • “He who asks a question is a fool for a minute; he who does not remains a fool forever.” (Chinese proverb)
  • “Questions wake people up. They prompt new ideas. They show people new places, new ways of doing things.” (Michael Marquardt)

Jesus also asked many questions as He interacted with the disciples and the crowds surrounding Him. In taking notice of His questions, I began to ask  …

“Why did Jesus ask so many questions?”

In asking questions, I think He hoped to achieve three things:

  1. Engage the crowd or individual in conversation.
  2. Make them curious about themselves and Him.
  3. Once they were curious, teach them about Himself.

Each day I want to look at a different question Jesus asked. I am hoping to gain insight into the question. But more so, I hope we learn about the people Jesus cared for and in so doing, learn of the One who cares enough to ask us all the hard questions.

It’s October 1st and once again I will be participating in #write31days . My first time was in 2013 . I enjoyed it so much, I did a second go round last year too. I look forward to any who will join me on this journey – “31 Questions Jesus Asked”.
