It all began when my kids were yet small. I wondered what God was thinking when He gave me them to mother. Some days I feared I would make such a mistake they would be scarred for life. And all I desired was for them to pursue God with all their hearts, with all their might, for all the days of their lives.
It was then the question began to cross my mind –
“Are you pursuing Me with all your heart, with all your might, with each of your days?”
And so the change began. I started rising a little earlier than the day demanded in order to read a few Scriptures. Mornings seemed hard for me then. Fifteen minutes was all I could manage at first, as my bed and pillow competed for God’s attention.
But soon the time stretched to a half hour.
There was a beauty to be found in the stillness under the cover of the morning darkness rather than under the bed covers. While my family still slept, I found refuge in my Bible, a devotional book, and a large cup of hot coffee.
David seemed to know and recognize the same beauty in early mornings …
“Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly. (Psalm 5:3, NLT)
“Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.” (Psalm 143:8,NLT)
See what I mean?
Knowing each day has its own demands and challenges, I have learned to bring them to Him even before I face the day. It is then I can be confident He will lead me, showing me where to walk and how to handle whatever the day delivers to my doorstep. He gives me the strength and wisdom needed when I have none.
How about you? Are you a morning person? Do you think you can become a morning person?
May we start the day off on the right foot and let God put a spring in our step all day!
Today I am joining … Three Worded Wednesday and The High Calling and Tell His Story and Wedded Wednesday and Works For Me and Tuesdays at Ten and Women With Intention .
I love my morning times with Jesus but I am more a slow morning girl then mamas have to be I think. when I stay with my sister and her three kiddos once a week I always grin at the differences in her mornings and mine and we are identical twins. I just love my coffee dates with Jesus (I am single) I just feel so loved by Him. Hope you have a great day
So glad you shared. I smiled to think how differently your mornings appear from your sister’s. One thing remains the same > He will meet us right there wherever we give Him the time š So grateful He does!
I’ve always considered myself a morning person. But the older I get, the more I want to be a morning person while still in bed. ha. I love waking up early to read, but not necessarily to get up and take a shower. š So morning quiet times work just right.
Lisa, I so hear you š & I am so grateful He hears us, wherever we may be when we spend time with Him.
I wholeheartedly agree, Joanne! So many young moms and wives feel stretched beyond their abilities to carve out this special time. But once you make that time (how ever short it may be) to be with the Lord, just the two of you in the quiet, sacred spaces of your day, you’ll know what David means when he said, “taste and see that the Lord is good.” Then you will want that good to invade every part of your, albeit hectic, day! Thanks for waving this banner, my friend! And I’m so glad to know that you do this very important priority every day–although, I’d say, it shows! Hugs to you!
Beth, it is a challenge when kids are small and also wake early. It truly was birthed for me out of necessity as I so needed His help. So grateful He is more than willing to supply what we need as we come to Him. Blessings!
I’m not a morning person, but I sure like when I get started slowly with the day and can give the day to God before the ordinary sounds and chaos get going. Such encouragement here. Thanks for linking up at #ThreeWordWednesday.
Kristin, I can honestly say, I was not a morning person either when I began waking early. Now I struggle to stay in bed until the alarm goes off š Funny how age & God can change us. Always a joy to join you!
Not a morning person, Joanne. Used to be a night person, but that’s fading along with my youth. š But – yes taking that time to be still before God and savor His word, with a heart like David’s, that’s the kind of person I want to be – all day, every day.
Tiffany, I so like how you worded it – all day, every day. May it be so!
I totally a morning person and cherish the little bits of time I have when the house is still asleep. That’s my time to pray, be with God and write. I have to work on not turning to ‘grouchy mom’, though, when the kids wake up before they’re supposed to and intrude on my time š (they seem to be morning people, too)
Kathryn, you brought a laugh as I so well remember not wanting to be interrupted in the mornings. The combination of quietness, Scripture & coffee was so needed. May He bless your time in the mornings to come!
I completely identify with your words (and pictures) here! š I have often had a discussion, one-sided in nature, of course, wondering why He thought I could be a momma to these kiddos. Getting up early and spending time with Jesus is the saving grace for my day.
Bless you Joanne!
Dawn, getting up early has been my saving grace as well. I can well remember one morning missing it & being “off” that day. OK, flat out grumpy. And one of my children asked me if I had my “quiet time”. When I admitted I had not, they replied that they knew it. And they were not being sassy. Just sharing their observation š
My kids say the same thing. It is a humbling hallelujah moment when that happens, but they know what I really need when I miss it!
Bless you Joanne!
