I recently had the opportunity to read “Rhinestone Jesus” by Kristen Welch. I first became familiar with Kristen when funds were being raised for Mercy House Kenya, a nonprofit maternity home in Kenya which she founded. And so, when contacted to become a member of the launch team for her book, I jumped and responded yes as I wanted to know the back story.
Little did I know the journey it would put me on.
Kristen takes you back and introduces herself to you as a teenager who boldly proclaimed Jesus wherever she went, even to the point of proudly wearing a Jesus pin each day to school. But only when her life is rocked and she comes face to face with the reality of how much she needs Jesus in her life, does she begin to follow the dreams which God has deposited into her life.
Rhinestone Jesus quickly became a book which got under my own skin and challenged me deeply in my own walk. I have found myself reading portions out loud to my family members as their own dreams are being birthed.
This is a story of an ordinary mom with an ordinary life being changed before in ways never expected or anticipated and living the extraordinary.
But even more so – this is a book that quickly becomes each of our own stories as well.
As I read the book, I felt inspired. Empowered actually. I found myself wanting to say “yes” in the midst of being a wife, a mom of grown children, a Mimi doing daycare for my granddaughters. I found myself asking God to show me where, if I said “yes”, I would and could make a difference. I have been amazed at how He has responded … at the supermarket, at the post office and at the bank. It is in the middle of our messes that our faith can be courageous and most shine.
This book will make you laugh and it will bring you to tears. Mostly, it will bring you to your knees before God. You will beg to be different. To be used in ways which truly matter and make a difference. You will no longer be able to settle.
Check out this trailer when your safe faith is no longer enough and you need to be challenged:

You know, I have been waiting on Him and I’m truly not sure what He wants me to say Yes to. Right now it seems like He is telling me to accept where I am, be in gratitude for what He has done in me and the positive effect that is having on my children. He is telling me to say Yes to walking with Him and trusting in Him. For now, that is all I know.

I am a mum to a Beautiful new baby boy and a wife to a wondeful husband, I live a comfortable life although a somewhat challenging one as I have suffered from mental illness for ten years. I could easily settle for an ‘easy life’ but believe God wants more for Him and more for me and my family. In the depth of my heart I feel a call to help those in need, those who haven’t yet heard the Gospel! I want to be God’s hands and feet and am leaning daily on Him as I learn what my ‘yes’ will mean, so excited to see what our great God had in store!

Rhinestone Jesus sounds like an awesome powerful book. I too love the back story…and I love the question. Hmmmmm…What is God asking me to say yes to? Right now I think God is asking me to say yes to trusting Him, to say yes to more of Him and less of my busyness, to say yes to each day’s instructions and not worry about the rest.

The more I hear about this book, the more I’d like to read it. I’m not sure what I’m being asked to say yes to, but maybe it’s focusing on being a mom through my daughter’s health issues, and leaning on Him every step of the way. (Because that’s what has been happening.)

Thank you for hosting a linkup to share about wonderful books. Always a pleasure to join you!
I love your thoughts on this book. It seems to be making a huge impact on so many people! I’ve been saying yes to God in some minor health issues. Just by saying YES even when I don’t know where it is I am going or what I am saying Yes too!
This is a wonderful book which will surely challenge every one of us – in things big & small. They all matter to our God. I do hope you get to read the book as you will surely enjoy it.
