Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Second.
Upon seeing the word prompt this morning, only one thought came to mind … “second nature.”
The expression second nature means having something so ingrained in one’s personality or being that it begins to come naturally, almost without any effort.
“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus …” (Philippians 2:5, NASB)
What was that attitude, or mind, or mindset (depending on which version you read)?
Jesus was humble, obedient, and willing to serve others.
Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, tells us to “walk by the Spirit”, to be controlled by the Spirit. Godly character is formed, or produced, as we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23, NASB)
Becoming more like Jesus
will become second nature
as we let Him do the work in us.

Today I may be joining …
Sinning’s second nature,
but that don’t mean it’s right.
I was made for something greater,
to emulate the Christ,
but I can’t do this on my own,
however hard I try.
I can’t be taught, I can’t be shown,
there’s nothing I can buy
that will lead me on this road
to the cherished destination.
No, I must give Him my load
of sin, no hesitation,
and accept that it’s my place
to follow in His steps of grace.
Indeed, it is all by His grace alone.
My life’s work.
