Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Usually.
A quick peek at the definition tells me it is to follow the ordinary course of things or events (from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary).
There are things or actions I usually do at the start of each day:
- I usually set the coffee pot and timer each night before bed so when I wake, it is waiting for me.
- I usually wake up much earlier than everyone else so as to enjoy said coffee and quiet in the stillness of the morning.
- I usually read my devotional book and Scriptures.
- I usually play Wordle and Connections.
- I usually make the beds as soon as everyone is out of them.
- I usually spend time with my parents each morning.
Just sharing those few things I usually do, remind me of how I enjoy this routine. It brings a sense of peace to my day. It brings to mind this Scripture:
“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.” (Psalm 5:3, NKJV)
But then I am reminded of how differently are the actions of God and it brings to mind the line of a poem:
“God moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;
He plants his footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.”(William Cowper)
Both these thoughts mesh this morning to bring comfort.
I will continue with my usual morning routine,
and God will continue with His mysterious ways,
as He usually meets with me on the pages of His Word.
Sometimes, in this fast-paced, topsy-turvy world in which we live, the “usual” brings us comfort and a sense of stabilty. Of course,if we’re in a rut and resisting a needed change, then the usual may be a stumbling block. But, it’s of greater comfort to know that Jesus and His love for us doesn’t change.
I really enjoyed your post. I like how you contrasted your usual routine with God’s mysterious ways. God bless you.
Yes! I agree and I love the way you put it. If I show up in the morning, so does God. And He always gives direction. God bless your day!
A beautiful post Joanne. I relish my usual routine, it brings me comfort & joy too.
I especially cherished it when my late husband passed into glory & I had to face each day working the farm without him.
But the Lord was my constant companion. With my faithful sheep dog Polly helping me work the sheep.
Blessings, Jennifer
I really wish that coffee
was something that I still might drink,
but that capacity’s worn off me,
and this loss has made me think
of other things t’were left behind,
like Diet Coke and apple pie,
and it messes up my mind
that some bad day, ere I die,
I might lose my taste for beer,
and turn then to a substitute,
which will make it very clear
that I’ll be pulled, branch, stem, and root
from this comfortable earth
to a place of fresh rebirth.
I enjoyed this. thank you. 🙂 FMF16
Made me ponder. Yes, His ways are mysterious and no formula, yet He is the same yesterday, today and forever. All part of the mystery that my little brain won’t even attempt to fathom.
