Matthew 14:22-32.
Here we find the disciples in a boat, on the sea, in the midst of a storm. We always marvel at how they were fearful. We always wonder how they could be fearful or doubtful when they had been with Jesus, experiencing the miracles first hand.
And yet … they were no different than we are today.
Circumstances in life can cause us to waver, to doubt, to get angry, or to be fearful.
In those very times, we have the written Word of God to turn to for peace and assurance. We need to remember the words we have read, heard, and studied.
“When we know Christ’s character and promises, it influences our attitudes and how we respond to different situations in our lives.”
“The character of Christ gives us encouragement, comfort, and hope for every life circumstance. But we must recall and rest in these truths of Christ daily.”
(from I Am by The Daily Grace Co., page 158)
Know. Recall. Rest.
Those were the words which stood out to me one morning recently. It’s imperative for us to do these three actions if we are going to survive this life. Those actions will lead us to grow in our faith, and to remain steadfast.
Peter was able to walk on water to Jesus until he took his eyes off the Lord and began to see the storm, or circumstances, around him.
We may not do as Peter and find ourselves walking on water, but we can surely walk on top of circumstances and not be taken under.
We may not be spared from the storms of life,
but Jesus is with us in the midst of our circumstances.
Know. Recall. Rest.
Each week the posts shared are special to me, bringing just the words and encouragement needed. Barbara Harper’s post, “What If You Have Good Reason to Fear” HERE, brought the peace and assurance which was needed last Wednesday. If you struggle with fear or have a challenging situation in your life, her words will bring encouragement.
Come, sit a spell. Bring your coffee, your posts, and your thoughts. If you link up, kindly visit those who have drawn up a seat around you.

Today I may be joining … Tell His Story
“We may not be spared from the storms of life,
but Jesus is with us in the midst of our circumstances.
Know. Recall. Rest.”
Amen!
Thank you Joanne.
Blessings, Jennifer
Thanks for the gentle reminder to remember His words, His character, His past faithfulness, His redeeming love in all those potentially scary situations.
Happy 4th, friend.
Thanks so much for featuring my post.
What you said about knowing and recalling God’s Word is so spot on. I’ve found that anxiety and fear aren’t conquered in a single prayer session or Bible study. I have to battle them continually by reminding myself of God’s truths.
Joanne, I’ve been feeling a bit “taken under” this week and am grateful for this helpful reminder to “know, recall, rest.” The verse that comes to mind after reading your post is Isaiah 26:3 (in the KJV because that is how I memorized it long ago): “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Hugs, friend.
It’s so important when you’re in a rough patch to remember all the times God has come through for you in the past. He has never let me down, and I rest in that fact.
“Know. Recall. Rest.” Great insight to help us rest in Who He is, Joanne.
Know, recall, and rest. Then repeat! 🙂
Thank you for three simple words I needed today.
I once heard someone use the word “Exegete” to describe what we do with our circumstances. Just as we exegete scripture according to what we already know about God, we bring the same wisdom to our daily lives.
Great insight, Joanne. Love this, “we can surely walk on top of circumstances and not be taken under.” I pray to know, recall, and rest in the Lord. God bless!
These three things – “know, recall and rest” – are so important. It’s easy for the storm to feel overwhelming.
So simple and yet so profound … know, recall, rest. I’m going to be chewing on that today!
