Habakkuk. A small three chapter book tucked away in the midst of the Old Testament.

Habakkuk could have been alive today, in our country, and asking those same questions pertinent to the days in which we live. He saw the wickedness and injustices all around him. He questioned God – “Why do You allow injustice?” and “How long before You do anything?”

The book reminds me that we can come to the Lord with our questions and doubts. We can share our concerns.

Habakkuk had questions and he took them to God in a fashion very similar to Job.

• He wanted to know how long life would be troubling.
• He asked why God permitted events to occur at all.
• He asked why God didn’t put an end to all the evil and strife.

But in his questioning, he continued to be faithful to God. How?

• he remembered the character of God
• he remembered God’s ways were not always understandable but could be trusted
• he knew God is faithful to His covenant and word to His people
• he was sure of God’s goodness, while confident He is also just and holy
• he knew God would never leave His people

Habakkuk also brings the reminder to have faith in God, for He alone knows what He is doing or about to do. God will act in His own timing. But surely He will act.

God told Habakkuk to look around at the other nations. Look to see what was occurring.

“Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder!” (Habakkuk 1:5, NASB)

Habakkuk was asking questions and God answered him differently from Habakkuk’s expectations.

God was correcting Habakkuk’s focus.

“God gave Habakkuk a revelation, not an explanation; what we always need in times of doubt is a new view of God. The Lord doesn’t owe us any explanations, but He does graciously reveal Himself and His work to those who seek Him.”

God’s ways are higher; His thoughts toward us are loving and holy; His plans always accomplish His plans (not ours).

When I watch the events going on in our world and currently in our country. It can be overwhelming and discouraging at times, if I may be honest. The question I find myself asking God is “What is going to happen in the days ahead.”

I constantly remind myself that no matter what is going to happen in the days and years ahead, God will be with us and take care of us. In response, God fills my heart and mind with His peace.

We can have a settled peace
even in the midst of all the unsettledness around us,
as we get a new view of God.
