Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Dedicate.
Dedicate – a quick perusal of definitions reveals words like “to devote; to set apart for a definite use; to commit to a way of life” (merriam-webster.com).
We dedicated our children to the Lord in church when they were infants. As adults, it becomes their decision to continue to follow the Lord in His ways.
Dedication begins in the heart, each heart, our own hearts. Our hearts need to be dedicated to the Lord. They need to be fixed upon the Lord. He must rule and reign in our lives. We each must determine to walk with integrity always and have hearts that serve God alone.
And so, before writing this post, I asked myself the question: In order to have a heart dedicated to the Lord, to what must I be devoted?
- Unity. “These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.” (Acts 1:14, NASB)
- Others. “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor.” (Romans 12:10, NASB)
- Prayer. “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving.” (Colossians 4:2, NASB)
Let’s tend to our hearts.
Stay dedicated because
“The integrity of the honest keeps them on track.”
(Proverbs 11:3, MSG)

Today I may be joining …
Last night rain washed my Vale of Tears,
rolled down cheeks just like a flood
brought by new re-risen fears,
so I’m dedicated to a Bud
to begin the blood-dawn day
and to help me climbing back
to the broad and hopeful way
I walked before that cruel attack.
Sometimes you trip, sometimes you fall,
and it’s not sunny-side-up
like Humpty Dumpty from his wall,
but still you have to know wassup,
and be balanced ‘cross hard land
by a beer in either hand.
Unity, others and prayer. Wonderful choices for dedication!
I’m always amazed at your Friday posts–how you can develop such interesting and inspiring messages in a few minutes. Thank you, Joanne.
Your words mean so much to me, Katherine. I think it is because before I ever begin to write, I think about the word prompt and look up various Scriptures first. So I guess in a sense, it I give it more than 5 minutes 🙂 I time the writing but I do think about the word and Scriptures first.
I like how you’ve distilled what it means to be dedicated to those three elements. And I really like how The Message words the Proverb because that’s what I need – to stay on track. Visiting from FMF#10
I liked the message’s way of phrasing things as well. Well written. FMF11
I like that you highlight that dedication begins in our hearts. If our hearts are in the right place that will flow over into our words and actions.
“The integrity of the honest keeps them on track.” what a great truth!!!
