Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Consume.
“Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:28-29, NASB)
Upon seeing the word prompt, a lyrics to a favorite song came to mind …
“Our God is a consuming fire …”
(from “A Mighty Fortress” by Christy Nockels)
The song always brings comfort, encouragement, and peace both in the melody and lyrics. It is a reminder that one day our God will make all things right.
He will one day consume all that is unjust and unrighteous as He restores His Kingdom. May we keep our eyes on God: “For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God” (Deuteronomy 4:24, NASB). He longs for His people to be faithful to Him.
He is our refuge when the storms of life seek to shake us from our firm foundation for He is unshakeable.
“Our God is a consuming fire …”
So many people see God’s consuming fire as unfavorable, Joanne, but I agree that His consuming fire brings gratitude, reverence, and awe.
What a beautiful song! Oh God, consume us!
it’s a hard balance isn’t it? Seeing God as our refuge and yet as the consuming fire. FMF16
That’s a great song, love it.
