My oldest was in high school when I realized I needed to begin rising early in the morning. The need for quiet time, prayer, and the reading of Scripture was as real as my need for coffee. Although they are now married with children of their own, somewhere along the years the need became my desire.

It was dark when I woke this morning, as well it should be as it was 5:30. I knew it was snowing as I had looked out under the dim streetlights. But our yard was still in blackness and it was peaceful.

“I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden wealth of secret places, So that you may know that it is I, The Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.” (Isaiah 45:3, NASB)

There is treasure to be found in the early morning. God longs to show us what we need for the day, for our souls to stay strong, focused, and remembering who He is in our lives.

The words of a psalm read a week or so ago come to mind. Flipping the pages of my Bible, I begin to read Psalm 105.

The psalm reminds us:

  • to give thanks to the Lord
  • call upon His name
  • make known His deeds
  • sing to Him, singing praises
  • speak of His wonders
  • glory in His holy name
  • seek the Lord and His strength
  • and to seek His face continually

But it was verse 5 to which I was brought back:

“Remember His wonders which He has done, His marvels and the judgments uttered by His mouth.” (NASB)

We are told to remember what He has done. But then there is more:

“He has remembered His covenant forever. The word which He commanded to a thousand generations.”
(verse 8, NASB)

We remember what He has done; and He remembers what He has spoken or promised.

As we remember, so does God.

When we look back at what God has done in the past, He fills us with hope for today and the days to come.

We see His faithfulness, His compassion, mercy and grace towards us and our hearts are filled with praise.

We come to see that He has never failed us,
even when we didn’t understand what He was doing,
May we always remember His faithfulness.
