Waiting does not come easily to me, maybe for you as well. This past week in the psalms provided a good look at Who we wait upon to act.

Psalm 36

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” (verse 7, NASB)

We began with Psalm 36 as our focus. I encourage you to read it slowly and perhaps even more than once. It is such a rich psalm.

The psalm provides a view of the ungodly, and it is a good description of those we see today in the world. They have no fear or reverence for God, they flatter themselves, they speak falsely, are unwise, and embrace that which is evil and wrong.

But we have a shelter – God is our shelter from the storms of life and from the enemy. The study shared such a powerful fact:

“The wings of a bird are often stained with her own blood as she protects her young from the enemies. The wings of our Savior are stained with His own blood that has been poured out for us.”

(The Daily Grace Co.)

The study asks: What does God’s steadfast love tell us about who He is?

We have a place of rest, of safety … May we take refuge in the shadow of His wings.

Psalm 38

For I hope in You, O Lord; You will answer, O Lord my God.” (verse 15, NASB)

David knew he had sinned, done wrong, before God and man. The psalms are such a transparent look at all that was in David’s heart as he talked with God.

That transparency and honesty brought him into a powerfully deep relationship with God. And it is one we too can have when we come before God with a heart of repentance and not excuses.

God was with David in every situation and He will be with us as well when we remain repentant and restored.

“When David focused on himself and those around him, he was discouraged, but when he shifted his focus to the Lord, he found hope.”

(from The Daily Grace Co.)

The study asks: How can you shift your gaze off of yourself and others and to the Lord?

May we stay focused and thus, stay hope-filled!

Psalm 40

I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.” (verse 1, NASB)

David waited patiently for the Lord to answer his cries. I love that once the Lord heard him, He responded. He brought David out of the pit of his despair and set his feet upon a rock.

He does the same for us today. He hears us and lifts us out of our despairs, our hurts, our problems and sets us firmly upon The Rock – Jesus.

Let’s also look at verse 16 and the contrast we see there:

“But I am poor and needy; Yet the Lord thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer.” (NASB)

May we know who we are – ever needy and dependent upon Him. More so, may we know who He is – He is our help, our deliverer, and adequate for every need in our lives.

“How sweet to be outdone, overcome, and overwhelmed by the astonishing grace of the Lord our God.”

(Charles Spurgeon, as quoted in Wait by The Daily Grace Co.)

When life seeks to outdo, overcome and overwhelm us may we remember the grace of our Lord at work in our lives.

“God in His mercy doesn’t give us what we deserve, and God in His grace gives us what we don’t deserve.” (Warren Wiersbe)

His mercy and grace are ever at work in our lives. Amen?

How has God overwhelmed you recently? Let’s give Him the praise and honor due His Name.

We find shelter in our Lord,
as we maintain our focus upon Him,
and remain dependent on His grace and mercy.
