Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Moment.
Moment – I would define it as this present time, or in an instant.
Sometimes we think perhaps God has left us in the moment. Then we are assured, He is with us.
We forget in the moment what to say, and He fills our mouth with just the right words.
In those moments we don’t know what to do or where to go, He brings the needed guidance.
And like just now, upon seeing the word prompt, words begin weaving their way through your thoughts.
In that moment, I asked myself, “Is this an old hymn?” It has to be because more and more words keep coming.
Who knew they were stored in the recesses of my mind. But upon googling some of the words, I discover, not only is it an old hymn, but they came back correctly.
So in response to the word prompt, moment, here are the words to the hymn, Moment by Moment. May they encourage someone today as they did me.
“Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine;
Living with Jesus, a new life divine;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.Refrain:
Moment by moment I’m kept in his love;
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.Never a battle with wrong for the right’
Never a contest that He doth not fight;
Lifting above us His banner so white;
Moment by moment I’m kept in His sight.Never a trial that he is not there,
Never a burden that he doth not bear,
Never a sorrow that he doth not share,
Moment by moment, I’m under his care.Never a weakness that he doth not feel,
Never a sickness that he cannot heal;
Moment by moment, in woe or in weal,
Jesus, my Savior, abides with me still.”
Remember – Moment by moment
you are in His sight,
you are under His care,
Jesus abides with you still.Â

Today I may be joining …
Forgetting at times just what to say,
I wait for Lord God to intrude,
and He always saves the day
by promoting exclamation: ‘Dude!’
It’s perfect for so many questions,
like ‘Fancy tea?’, or ‘What’s your sign?’,
and lends itself to big suggestions,
such as, ‘Dear, will you be mine?’
There is no word with quite the scope
to raise a spirit when it’s blue,
to give the suffering the hope
that one day they’ll be cool, too,
and would Lincoln not the world impress,
one word as Gettysburg Address?
I thought of the same song, so it was good to see the lyrics again. I will be preaching in a couple of Sundays when our lead pastor is away. The text is…
Lamentations 3:22-24 (ESV)
22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
24 “The Lord is my portion,†says my soul, “therefore, I will hope in him.â€
Moment by moment I’m kept in his love;
Moment by moment I’ve life from above;
Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine;
Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.
We often forget the breadth and depth and width and length of God’s Love.
It is amazing to think that not a moment of our lives goes unnoticed by the Lord. Every moment seen by Him. Every moment cared for by Him. Every moment loved by Him. May the Lord bless you as you prepare your sermon and may He also prepare every heart to hear.
I’ve never heard this hymn, Joanne, thanks for sharing it with us.
Great post. It really touched my heart. Thank you. 💗Terri #5 FMF
Thank you for reading!
I was thinking of this hymn as I read the first part of your post, and I was delighted that you ended with it!
It’s amazing how old hymns stick with us. I have not heard it in years.
Beautiful song.
I’m not familiar with this hymn – somewhat surprising, as I usually recognize them! What a comfort it is that God gives us just what we need each moment. Visiting from FMF#16
that is a lovely old song. Thank you for it! 🙂
This is beautiful Joanne. I love your words here.
Visiting today from FMF#13
Life is only lived in this moment; it’s a truth I have to remind myself of often because my mind tends to drift toward the past or into the future. But now is where God is most present with me!
Thanks for the encouraging post, Joanne.
I’ve never heard this old hymn before. Thanks for sharing.
Grateful that “Moment by moment
you are in His sight,
you are under His care,”
