Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Music.
The morning is my favorite time of day as I sit in the quiet and read my devotional book and Scripture, The readings almost always bring the words to a song, or leave me humming a melody without my realizing I am even doing so.
As I pay attention to what I am humming, the song fits in with what I read, confirming the Scriptures just read.
Music – a collection of sounds, notes, instruments, and words which when brought together speak a message.
The music which comes to mind can be an old hymn, or a new worship song sung down through the years. At this point in my life, I have had years of singing and collecting songs in my heart.
No matter the song which comes, it stays in my heart throughout the day, reminding me of the very words God spoke to my heart through the pages of His Word.
Job recognized that God gives songs in the night to bring peace and comfort in times of pain.
The psalmist wrote of God surrounding him with songs of deliverance.
The psalmist encourages us to sing for joy in the Lord and even to sing to Him a new song.
No matter what music you may enjoy, I encourage you to sing a song today.
“Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones; Praise is becoming to the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings.
Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy.
For the word of the Lord is upright,
And all His work is done in faithfulness.”
(Psalm 33:1-4, NASB)

Today I may be joining …
There is a song within me
(couldn’t happen to a nicer fellow)
’bout Fab Four on a greeny sea
in a submarine of yellow,
having their friends all aboard
committing music through the day,
with yet more of them next door
and others on the way.
Yes, it sounds all-matey-like,
with Lord God as my witness,
though I’m waiting for the worst to strike,
the onset of sea-sickness,
but better Yellow Submarine
than Sesame Street’s benighted theme.
Andrew, you bring an interesting thought. I wonder if God will have a song unique to each one of us when we finally make it home. You have brought to mind Zephaniah 3:17 – “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.â€
This very thing happens to me too! I love that! It keeps scripture in my head all day long!!
Since we all are reading varied Scriptures, just think of all the different songs we sing on any given day!
Isn’t it wonderful when God gives you a song for the day? No matter what I am going through that day, the song helps pull me through.

It really is amazing how God ministers to us through song!
It is wonderful to have the “words to a song, or humming a melody…confirming the Scriptures just read.” God’s Word and beautiful music springing up throughout the day brings such delight to our hearts, Joanne.
Lisa, the way God tends to us continually each day is astounding. He gives a song to keep us going in the path He has for us.
I always have a song come to mind too when I read the Bible (or in almost any situation!). I love how music can help us carry something of God’s truth with us into the day.
There is something about singing out loud that changes my head space and even lifts my mood.
Yes (!), out loud is even better!
songs do that don’t they… sticking with us for longer sometimes than we anticipate.
That’s so it, Annette – they stick in our head. Which reminded me of the importance of what we listen to.
It’s so important that the songs playing in our heads all day long are songs that honor God! (I have a whole blog post about that rolling in my head, inspired by my FMF writing earlier today!) That’s why I love musical settings of the Scriptures. Visiting from FMF#11
So very true- we must be mindful of the message we are telling ourselves and allow to roll around in our heads. Very good point!
Most mornings I wake with music playing in my head. What a lovely way to begin the day.
Over time I’ve learned to pray and sing myself to sleep at night and do the same in the morning. But not out loud. Just in my heart and mind.
Sure beats hand-wringing, counting sheep, and imagining worst case scenarios.
Thank You, Jesus.
So many things in life remind me of songs. I got it from my mom. She had a song for everything. I love to sing funny songs with my grandkids, as well as, simple ones about the Lord. But I don’t sing too loud with anyone else except the Lord. LOL And, incidentally, Creed is one of my all-time favorites.
I love this, friend! Music is so powerful and such a gift and a tool! I too often wake up with a song that stays with me throughout the day! (And I too thought of that verse in Zeph about how God sings over us!) Lord, tune our ears to hear the lyrics of the love song you are singing!
Songs do tend to stick in our heads.
Sometimes for me it’s just a couple of lines that keep repeating over and over.
