Every Friday I join a community of bloggers for Five Minute Friday. One word prompt, five minutes. Unedited. The prompt this week is … Stir.
Stir can be defined as a movement with a hand or a spatula so as to mix, dissolve, or blend all the ingredients.
Cheese sauce comes to mind. As I stir the butter, flour, and milk, I continue stirring it all while it is on the burner, waiting for the right time to add the cheese.
It seems like such a long time for it all to blend and begin to thicken. Suddenly the parts are no longer separated and distinguishable. The stirring has caused them to mix and to be used for the purpose they were intended.
“Therefore, I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” (2 Timothy 1:6, NKJV)
As we fan the flame within us, heating it up through and through, that we will each find ourselves stirred up and ready to be used for our God’s glory.
We each have been given gifts suited for our personalities and abilities. Each one of us has a purpose, one we need to live out so we fulfill His intended purpose. And when we do, we will find satisfaction in life.
A quote I kept a few years ago comes to mind:
“…to become one consistency… We needed to be stirred until there was no separation left between solid and liquid, between secular and spiritual, weekdays and Sundays. Our lives needed to be of one consistency, through and through, ready to do the task for which we were created.”
(from Living Faith by Dr. Helen Roseveare, page 37)
What has been left dormant? What needs to be stirred up in our lives?
May God stir up our lives – body, soul and spirit
until we become one consistency,
more and more like Him.

Today I may be joining …
Stir my life and stir my heart,
Lord, for it’s the thing to do
that I might become a part
of that which walks the world for You.
Stir my soul and stir my mind,
stir the ways I hear and see,
that in seeking I will find
all that You have meant for me.
Stir, then, please, the hardest thing,
stir and fold my prejudice,
and then, please, to the cook-pot bring
that which none who love You miss,
a lightening and laughing mien
to make full real Your holy dream.
Beautiful, Andrew!
That’s a great quote, Joanne! And, yes, I think often the times we are stirred up, while not always pleasant, can be how God works in our lives.
So true, Leslie.
sometimes I don’t want to be reminded that hard times are a time of growth and change. A time of learning. but at the same time it’s good to be reminded.
It’s a funny quandary we find ourselves in at times. I think we don’t want to be reminded in the midst, but afterwards we realize it was for our good and for our growth.
You stated it so well, Joanne, “Each one of us has a purpose, one we need to live out so we fulfill His intended purpose. And when we do, we will find satisfaction in life.” And I appreciate the quote you shared by Dr. Helen Roseveare.
Thank you, Lisa.
Such comforting words here today Joanne.
