We all face times when we are truly out of words – when we cannot find the words to say to others, ourselves, or even to pray. It is wonderful to have a guide or a book for just those times.
Out Of Words, by Carmen Horne, is the perfect devotional for those times, as it will give us the words when we ourselves have none.
Each devotional is a short read as Carmen understands that when we are heartbroken or sad, we may not be able to do more than a quick read. Our wounded hearts just want to reach for an encouraging word, a hope-filled thought, or a comforting Scripture.
There are thirty-one segments, each containing a short devotion, a prayer, a journaling page, and a coaching page to help with sorting thoughts.
Each reading concludes with a Scripture affirmation and a hope-filled declaration sure to turn one’s focus to the only One who can heal our hurting hearts.
Carmen’s writing is gentle in a world that often is harsh. One of my favorite thoughts can be found in Devotional 13:
“Our endurance depends, not on ourselves, but rather on our unwavering belief in the omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence of God.
God lightens our burdens by strengthening our faith in His supreme wisdom, power, and presence.”
And another from Devotional 29:
“It is an eternal perspective that empowers us to walk through tough times. Heaven awaits us. The weariness of this world is not the end of a Christian’s story. The knowledge of this enables us to live with contentment as we face our struggles.
Changing our perspective is an ongoing process. We need Holy Spirit power to look at life from His eternal perspective.”
Each reading brings comfort and hope for ourselves, and to offer to others. This is a beautiful book and will offer encouragement each time one reaches for it.

I love that Carmen is speaking truth and hope into this space of brokenness. It is so deeply needed.
Yes, and she does so gently and beautifully.
Rebecca, you are so right. There are so many hurting people. I didn’t realize how many there are until I began this book. I am so thankful for the hope we find in our relationship with Jesus. So glad you stopped by for a visit!
I am in the process of looking for a new book of short devotionals to read every day. Right now, I am reading Mary Oliver poems. I have rationed myself to one per day so that I can think about each one as I read it. I especially love this line from the book: “It is an eternal perspective that empowers us to walk through tough times.” So true! I will check it out!
I LOVE the quote! Thank you for sharing!
