Each Friday my writing stems from a word prompt. Five minutes, one word prompt. The prompt this week is … Listen.

Interesting word – listen – to me it means to pay attention to; to absorb what is being said.

Moses, in calling the people to a wholehearted commitment to God said:

“Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.” (Deuteronomy 6:4, NLT)

Sitting and looking at the words before me, I am reminded these words instruct us not only to listen with our ears, but to obey what is heard.

Who are we to listen to?

God. One God. The Lord alone. There is none other.

To listen to His Word without putting it into effect in my life, is not to listen at all. Listening incorporates obedience.

Moses continues …

“And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.” (verse 5)

Love will take all of our being. It will be no easy task, some days requiring more effort and expression of praise than other days. But God wants every part of us to love Him.

And Moses goes on …

“And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today.” (verse 6)

These words are so important Jesus repeated them and they have been recorded for us in three of the Gospels. God is quite serious in requiring us to listen to Him, to obey Him, to love Him, and to commit our lives to Him.

Jesus, in quoting these verses, said this was the first and greatest commandment. In taking the time to listen this morning, I came to realize:

One God.
Who has one purpose – salvation,
and desires His people to become one.
Listen.
