Today I am remembering a time when my husband and I were away for a few days. We decided to drive up to the top of Mt. Washington, something neither of us had ever experienced before.
It was a beautiful day and the ride up began quite nicely. The views were absolutely amazing. As we continued upward, the road was winding and narrowing, and with each turn, narrowed even more.
There was no guardrail to keep one from going over the side and to say the ride was harrowing is not an understatement. But the majesty and beauty of the view kept us pressing on.
We did not go all the way to the top that day as fear overtook us both. We turned around when a safe opportunity presented itself to begin the descent.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”  (Proverbs 9:10, NIV)

The grandeur of the mountains that day during the ride, gave us a small glimpse into the majesty and greatness of our God. Somehow in the vast expanse of the mountainside, we realized how big and powerful was our Creator.
And in that moment, we felt quite small. Perhaps this was the fear which gripped us.
When we catch a glimpse of the power and might of God, His creativity, we are suddenly brought to an awareness of Who He is and our only response can be a reverent fear. An awe.
This fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom because it causes us to see God set apart in His power and sovereignty. We see ourselves as powerless, and needy, and dependent on Him for all things.
And there is a sacredness, a sense of mystery in it all –
For as great and big as God is,
He is interested in the tiniest of details in our lives.
Oh, my toes start tingling just reading about your mountain drive, Joanne. I don’t handle those well! ha. I usually have to close my eyes and start praying and try to totally distract myself from the realization that I could literally fall off a mountain at any second. Glad you were able to find a beautiful point to it all! “For as great and big as God is,
He is interested in the tiniest of details in our lives.” Amen.
I grew up in Colorado and have been on many of those mountain drives, where the edge of the road seems to match the end of the car. Thankfully, I was never the one driving. I love your connection, Joanne, of how God’s greatness reveals our smallness and increases our fear and reverence for how big He is.
Crystal, like you, I am very grateful I was not the one driving. Not sure I would be brave enough.
Hi Joanne, What a great description of the fear of the Lord. I’m so glad God is interested in the tiny details of our lives. Saying a prayer for you and all who will read this. Blessings!
Appreciating the greatness of God does give our lives proper perspective. It’s easy to get caught up in the swirling storm in the valley and forget that God is bigger, and more than enough to handle it all. I definitely needed this reminder today 🙂
