As I am getting older, {{did I even just say that?}}, life becomes increasingly precious. Each day is a gift in and of itself. Time spent with loved ones more precious.
Just last night, my husband and I spent hours, HOURS, playing Hearts with family. We played cards, ate junk food which we called appetizers and laughed. Got up from the table to get dinner, which was real food, and sat back at the table to continue playing cards. We laughed till our sides hurt and our eyes squirted.
And can I just say – It. Sure. Felt. Good!
It felt wonderful to play and eat and laugh while yet hearing hard news earlier which reminded me, again – life is a gift.
We are eternal beings living in a finite world. Time as we know it will one day end for us. How do they say it? >> The clock will stop ticking. But that is only here on earth as our God has a time clock which will tick forever.
So how do we make sense of this concept of “time”?
Yesterday the passage read for the sermon included this verse ….
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35, NIV)
In this passage, Jesus is at the start of His earthly ministry. He must have had much to do. Probably had a “to-do” list tucked away in the folds of his robe. His day had to include people to see and places to go. Seems His day was much like ours – busy.
And yet, in the midst of all He needed to get done in order to accomplish His Father’s business, He set aside time to pray.
Pastor put it this way – “He knew to unplug.”
Unplug, as defined by dictionary.com >> “to be free from obstruction; to unclog”.
We are eternal beings living in a finite world. But here’s the thing — we must maintain our eternal perspective. In order to do that, we are going to need to be free from those things which obstruct our view of the pertinent. We’ll need to unclog our ears to hear from Him.
My life, and yours too, is going to pass in a flash. We want to live purposefully, keeping our eyes on the eternal while here in the temporal.
In so doing, all that we do in this temporal world will matter for all eternity.

So true. We forget that even the little things we do on a daily basis can be for or against eternity!
We so need to be reminded that the little things we do are bigger in His eyes than we realize. May we grow & develop an eternal perspective this year too. Blessings!
You are so right! Spending time with precious family laughing until we cry is very important (especially in today’s world where every dinner conversation seems to be interrupted by the phone or ‘checking something online.’ We need to balance things–time connected with others and time unplugged when we can recharge (funny how unplugging means recharging, eh?).
Anita, I so love how you worded it >> “unplugging means recharging”. Excellent to remember!
What a wonderful reminder…How good it is to UNPLUG! So glad to meet you through Angie’s Inspire Me Monday!
Thank you! It is always wonderful to meet new friends 🙂
Times like these are precious indeed. Unplugging and letting unplanned life just unfold is one of my very favorite things in all the world. Thank you for linking at Unforced Rhythms.
Beth, it is amazing to step back & see exactly what He unfolds. Have a wonderful week!
So true the littler things we do are bigger in his eyes.
The way you shared that comment made me realize that perhaps it is for our own good that it is so.
