Doubts. We all experience them at times in our lives. But most often we tend to keep them to ourselves.
In his book, How Can I Be Sure?, author John Stevens addresses the struggle of faith and doubt. This is a short book which I read in one sitting. The author succinctly deals with several key issues:
- defining doubt
- the dangerous aspects of doubt
- overcoming doubt in ourselves and helping others
- how to develop a confident faith
Stevens assures us of the many heroes of the faith whom have experienced the same struggles with doubt, asking many of the same questions, yet rose to overcome. He states,
“True faith that triumphs over unbelief is always a miracle of God.”
“Doubt is not the same as unbelief.”
“While doubt can be dangerous, it also presents an opportunity to grow into stronger faith and maturity.”
The book is filled with quotes on faith and doubt, adding much to think about and embrace. It also includes a list of resources to help with specific doubts. While a small book, this is a wonderful resource for everyone and is written with a gentleness intended to bring release from doubt.
He encourages us to view doubt as “an opportunity for spiritual growth” stating … “The very circumstances that cause us to doubt may be the means that God uses to test, refine and strengthen our faith.”

Sounds like a good book. I sometimes think we run from problems like doubt instead of facing them and working through them. sounds like this book would help with that process.
It should be a very helpful book to those needing help in processing doubts. It is a short & easy read.
God is not surprised or insulted by our doubt. He knows us. In my experience when I confess my doubt to the Lord He shows Himself to me in miraculous ways, affirming who He is. I think some people worry that God will punish them if they express doubt and I think that is misunderstanding who God is.
I agree, Laura. Like you, I think God wants that we bring our doubts to Him. And He is the One Who will help us to work beyond any of our doubts.
