I have been looking up a lot the last few days. I have been watching the clouds, the wind, the birds, the sun rise, the sun set, the rain and snowflakes falling. Each one of these requires me to look up.
Yet each day may also present me with reasons to look up:
- a colicky baby requiring endless hours of comfort
- overflowing laundry hampers
- a sassy child
- a pile of bills
- the thought of filing income tax returns
- hearing the oil burner kick on, constantly, this winter
- death of a loved one
- parenting
- the unknown future
- growing old
- challenges at work
Any one of these may cause my eyes to look up. Lately I have noticed looking up seems to come naturally. I look up knowing my God is higher than the heavens. I look up believing He is over it all. In looking up, I remember His thoughts are not my thoughts, nor are my ways His ways. I look up, recalling that He sees everything. He hears my prayers and the words I mutter as I need His help.
I lift up my eyes to the hills – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2, NIV)
In lifting up my eyes, I am simply stating my utter dependence on Him. I lift my eyes to admit I need help, I need Him. In looking up, I am not looking to anything but to the very Maker of all things, God Himself, and seeking His help. He is the only One who has infinite and immeasurable power and can intervene in the events and challenges in my life.
In looking up, I lift my eyes above my circumstances, looking to the only One Who is able.
I started writing this post and then put on a new CD and hear the words….
I will look up for there is none above you
I will bow down to tell you that I need you
Jesus, Lord of all
Jesus, Lord of all
I will look back and see that you are faithful
I look ahead believing you are able
Jesus, Lord of all
Jesus, Lord of All(Elevation Worship, I will Look Up)
In looking up I come to know and believe and remember my God has been faithful to me all my life. I am assured He is able to do all things. And in looking up, I find faith for tomorrow.
All my unknown tomorrows are already known to Him.

It’s so easy, when the daily hits keep coming, for me to find myself looking down, rather than up. To look inside of myself and despair, rather than look heavenward and find hope. Your words will ring in my ear today!
It is so very true that the daily hits will keep us looking down. I am finding that as I intentionally look upward, I begin to also look above my circumstances. My focus changes from the circumstances to the One who can work in & through them. May we keep looking to Him. Glad you stopped here today!
Just beautiful!! What an important and powerful message you share…
We must constantly rely on our Heavenly Father and trust that His Sovereignty is higher than the clouds we see… and our ways belong to Him.
Thank you for the reminder to always look up.
(Visiting from PYHO!)
It is a constant & deliberate reliance on Him. Glad that you stopped here today!
Psalms 121 became very dear to me when I was in the hospital in 2012. I am so thankful that He is my Help.
Love the worship song — downloaded it immediately!

Love this, “In looking up, I lift my eyes above my circumstances, looking to the only One Who is able.” Goodness, do I need to be reminded of this day after day!
Thanks for linking-up with New Every Morning! 🙂
We so do need to be constantly reminded. Praying that I do not forget. Have a blessed Sunday!
Beautiful Post! I love those moments when we take the time TO look up and notice all the beauty He has made…..because then it sinks in that He is the Creator and will forever shelter us 🙂
May it sink in that He will forever shelter us! Thank you for sharing that thought with me! Blessings.
