There is a type of sound that can just get under your skin. You know the kind I am talking about….
- chalk scratching on a chalkboard
- the dentist’s screeching drill
- the high pitched drone of a bad steering wheel belt (yes I am married to a mechanic!)
- a toddler with a harmonica
- a dishwasher that desperately needs a repair
- your child with their first recorder (remember that???)
It is that sound that after a while, well, it kind of gets on your last nerve. This week, we have a new one of those sounds in our family. Let me introduce you…..
Yes, it is the sound of rat-a-tat-tatting of tap shoes! And on the feet of a five year old, well, you can imagine the sound. But then they are on the feet of this precious one, who is just delighted with the very sound….
So while I laughingly told my daughter that I was glad that tapping was at her house, something began to stir in me. Funny how those sounds can teach a lesson….
Immediately what came to mind was….
“….a quarrelsome wife is like the constant dripping of a leaky roof.”ĆĀ (Proverbs 19:14b NIV)
This version might make it a little clearer….
“….a quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping.” Or this one….
“….a nagging spouse is a leaky faucet.”
See what I mean? There are sounds that can get under our skin. They can be annoying & wear us down. I surely do not want to be one of those sounds for my family.
And now I have those tapping feet to always keep me in line!
Today I am linked with Behind the Scenes and Tell Me A Story and Unite and Titus 2sdays .
Thanks so much for this reminder. We think we don’t nag but if we listen carefully we might occasionally hear that annoying sound of our voice asking for something from our husband. For me it can be a ‘good’ thing as I will be asking him to spend a little time with me. I found you over at The Time-Warp Wife.
What a great reminder! Your girl sure looks like she’s enjoying the sound her new shoes make. And boy do I remember the “child with a new recorder” sound! Ouch!
LOL, some memories never leave us!
How lovely that your child can learn to tap dance. I always thought that would be a fun thing to do, but it was not for me to do in our family. Yes, bitter words from a wife or anyone for that matter can be annoying. May we watch our speach and allow sweet words to come forth. Thank you for sharing here at “Tell Me a Story.”
Thank you for the reminder of the dripping faucet and nagging. I think I have been guilty of that with all of our recent remodeling. We also have a new frig that drives us all nuts with its whiny, high-pitched sound! It will be a good reminder until we get rid of it!!!
Janis – It strikes me funny how we each can identify the sound that drives us crazy. May your fridge last until you get the new one!
Such a great post, but I have to admit that your little list at the beginning sent chills up my spine. *cringe* And one of my closest friends is an elementary music teacher…she always has some great insight and stories to share about teaching 4th graders how to play the recorder. (Can you imagine a whole class of children with recorders? She has the patience of…well, not me!) Blessings, friend…love this. š
Mel – My daughter is also a music teacher. So yes, we know the sound of a classroom learning the recorder for the first time š Too funny! We all know those sounds well. Thanks for coming by & making me chuckle!
I miss hearing my granddaughters dancing when they were much younger. They were good, but got too sidetracked. Anyhow, know you said much else that was important, but this is what hit me. G-mas can get too sidetracked too easily. Oh, well…
Thanks for visiting me from UNITE Joanne!
I remember very well the sound of shoes tapping when my daughter was a little girl-ha! Sweet memories! š Love what came to your mind when you thought of annoying sounds and distractions; nagging is definitely an irritating (and sometimes destructive!) behavior, and one that I catch myself doing on occasion. The results of loving and kind words work much better š
Blessings for a week of His amazing love Joanne!
Denise
