Since I am on vacation, I thought it would be a good time to re-post one from July 30, 2011.
So much talk about leadership these days. There are more books, more articles, more blogs & more tweets on the subject than ever before. Yet I wonder if for all that, are we really becoming any better at leading?
The other day I was reading in Scripture where King David was collecting gifts for the Temple. David turns to the assembly of people & is explaining that his son, Solomon, will be the one to construct the Temple. He tells the people all that will be needed in order to build this dwelling for God Himself. Then he says,
“And now, because of my devotion to the Temple of God, I am giving all of my own private treasure of gold & silver to help in the constructions. This is in addition to the building materials I have already collected for his holy Temple.” (1 Chronicles 29: 3 NLT).
He then asks the pivotal question:
“Now then, who will follow my example & give offerings to the Lord today?” (verse 5b NLT).
Here is what I gleaned from this portion of Scripture:
- As a leader, be devoted.
- As a leader, be giving.
- As a leader, be generous.
- As a leader, set an example others can follow.
David did not ask of the people that which he had not already begun to do. He set the example. He set the pace.
Want to know what resulted?
“Then the family leaders, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the general & captains of the army; and the king’s administrative officers all gave willingly.” (verse 6 NLT).
Bottom line? Be a leader that others CAN follow & then they will.

Dear Joanne
And when we look at Jesus, we see that He told us that leaders in His Kingdom should be the ones who is last, the ones who don’t lord it over others like the world’s leaders and the ones who serve in the most menial ways like washing feet.

Mia-
May we follow the lead of our Lord & serve rather than wanting or waiting to be served. Thank you for sharing today!
