Last week, it was suggested to me that I add “categories” to my blog. It was explained to me that categories make it easier for people to navigate a blog. I thought it was a good suggestion. Soon I discovered that it was more difficult than it first appeared.

“Categories” as defined by dictionary.com is “any general or comprehensive division.”

In looking at different blogs, I noticed that everyone chooses their own categories because in a very real sense, the categories describe & define the blog itself. So categories are subjective. Once I decided that I did want to categorize, it took me several days to decide on how I wanted to word each category. It took time to decide which posts belonged in which category.

During this process, I got to thinking how each of us categorizes our lives….

  • too difficult
  • exciting
  • doable
  • mundane
  • impossible

There is a problem with categorizing that has occurred to me – it is limiting. It confines that which we are contemplating within a certain parameter. Think about it….If we categorize a particular part of our day as mundane, then we no longer categorize it as, exciting. It we categorize a certain goal as doable then it will not be categorized as, impossible.

I think our God is wanting to break out of the categories that we have created in our lives. Listen to what He has to say about it all:

  • For nothing is impossible with God.  (Luke 1:37 NLT)
  • God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. (Ephesians 3:20 MSG)
  • No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him. (2 Corinthians 2:9 NLT)

May we not box in our God. He has much to accomplish in & through our lives.
