My Christmas cactus plant bloomed, yet again. Another single bloom. I’ve written about it before and thought for sure the last single bloom would be the last bloom for a good while.
But then another appeared yesterday.
Mind you, I enjoy plants but I would not say I have a green thumb. I just try hard, read up on my plants, and hope for the best.
Looking at the single bloom, I thought, “This is such a strange phenomenon” and that is when he came to mind.
Moses – He looked up and saw a bush, burning yet not consumed.
“So Moses said, ‘I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.” (Exodus 3:3, NASB)
That one turn to see led Moses to a life he could never have expected. It was the beginning of a forty year journey of faith. Each step of the way required faith, great faith, to lead God’s people in an exodus and trek to the promised land.
“It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.”
(Hebrews 11:27, NLT)
Moses persevered, kept on going, because he kept his eye on the One. He kept his eyes on the One, not permitting his focus to stray from the promises he had been given. He kept his eyes on the One who had been faithful since the beginning. He kept his eyes on the One, who had spoken to him from the burning bush.
This strange cactus plant, with its one bloom at a time activity, reminds me (and us) to keep my (our) eyes on the One. It is then we will see the One who is invisible, yet always active in our lives.
It is then we will see the One –
in nature,
in His Word, and
in our situations.
We will keep right on going because we kept our eyes on the One who is invisible!
Stories – they are enjoyed by both the listener and the storyteller. There is that special moment when the one telling the story knows the listener has grabbed hold of the point; and it makes all the difference in why we tell the story. This post, The Gift Of Telling Stories, by Laurie Hess is delightful.

Today I am joining …
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” How we need to keep our eyes on Him.
Yes and Amen, Barbara!
A call to focus! Yes, let’s fix our eyes on him!
I love the ways God uses nature to teach us more about his character! I’m also heartened by Moses’ listing in the faith hall of fame””he had some rocky moments, for sure! I can have rocky moments where I stumble and fall, but as long as I keep growing my faith, it will flourish.
Anita, I am so encouraged each time I read Hebrews 11. Each one had challenges in their faith journey. Some saw the result of their faith, others did not in this life. May I too, join the ranks of being faithful to believe, pursue, and persevere for all of my days. Blessings!
Thank you for the mention, Joanne. Your post reminded me of this verse from 2 Corinthians: So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Oh, to have the faith of Moses.
Amen, Laurie.
Amen. Focusing on Him in prayer and fasting today.
I love how God uses those little everyday things to remind us of him.
Leslie, I so agree. It is the little everyday things that have taught me some of the biggest life lessons.
Joanne, so much of the Christian walk is about focus isn’t it? And truly where our focus is, our heart follows. Thank you for this beautiful reminder!
Amen, Donna.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus! I love how God couples His creation and His Word to help us grasp truths!
I do too, Amy. It constantly shows me how deep His desire is to teach us His ways and His truth.
Joanne, Your lovely post really resonated with me today. There are days that I find myself focusing on the wrong thing or person(usually my own ego) and it’s harder to remind myself of the ONE. I do try most mornings to start that way, and your post inspired me this afternoon. Thank you <3
Joanne, how strange and exciting that your Christmas cactus produced another single bloom! In April, of all things! I love how it turned your thoughts to Moses and the burning bush, and the One who has been faithful since the beginning. Wonderful post, my friend.
Lois, this cactus plant has been one surprise after another. And continues to deliver a truth each time 🙂
